چکیده

Ferrofluid spin-up flow has been studied in finite height cylinders and spheres subjected to a uniform rotating magnetic field. Ultrasound measurements in finite height cylinders with a free surface show the presence of surface driven flows as well as bulk flows. In finite height cylinders with a cover, only bulk flows exist. Ultrasound measurements in fully filled spheres of ferrofluid give negligible measureable flow. The bulk spin-up flow has been attributed to the demagnetizing non-uniform magnetic field associated with the shape of the fluid, the nonuniform distribution of fluid magnetization, and to spin-diffusion. COMSOL Multiphysics simulations help confirm that the real mechanism of bulk spin-up flow is due to non-uniform magnetic properties of the ferrofluid, either imposed externally or associated with the shape of the ferrofluid.

Ultrasound velocimetry of ferrofluid spin-up flow measurements using a spherical coil assembly to impose a uniform rotating magnetic field

Ferrofluid spin-up flow is studiedwithin a sphere subjected to a uniform rotatingmagnetic field from two surrounding spherical coils carrying sinusoidally varying currents at right angles and 901 phase difference. Ultrasound velocimetry measurements in a full sphere of ferrofluid shows no measureable flow. There is significant bulk flow in a partially filled sphere (1–14 mm/s) of ferrofluid or ...

Ferrofluid Flow and Torque Measurements in

The purpose of this research is to provide data from ferrofluid flow and torque measurements in uniform and nonuniform rotating magnetic fields that can be compared to theoretical analyses in order to fully understand observed paradoxical ferrofluid behavior. In the presence of rotating magnetic fields, ferrofluid particles will rotate to try to align their magnetic moment with the field but be...

Torque Measurements in Spin-Up Flow of Ferrofluids

Measurements of magnetic-field-induced torque in applied uniform rotating magnetic fields are presented and compared to theoretical analyses for waterand oil-based ferrofluids. These experiments measure the viscous torque on the inner wall of a stationary hollow polycarbonate spindle that is completely filled with ferrofluid and attached to a viscometer functioning as a torque meter. The spindl...

Self-forming, quasi-two-dimensional, magnetic-fluid patterns with applied in-plane-rotating and dc-axial magnetic fields

We report flow instabilities with simultaneous, in-plane-rotating and dc-axial uniform magnetic fields. In uniform dc-axial magnetic fields, a ferrofluid drop in a Hele-Shaw cell with an ,1.0-mm gap forms the familiar labyrinth pattern. With subsequent application of an ,100-G rms in-plane, 20–40-Hz rotating uniform magnetic field, smooth spirals form. If the rotating magnetic field is applied ...
